Why is teaching so hard in DC?
It goes without saying that the pandemic did a number on students in the district though it is actually feeling like a losing battle within the classroom. Between working for DCPS and DC public charter schools, I’ve never seen so many teachers attempt to teach on autopilot while students display the most egregious behavior without any warning whatsoever. This isn’t to blame anybody but a failing system that is doing a disservice to all stakeholders involved - families, students, teachers, etc.
Despite having 7+ years of teaching experience, I find myself coming home drained beyond measure and holding myself together with the belief that the job market will open up enough so I can escape the classroom.
If you know a DC teacher, check in on them. We are not doing okay.
