Promoted myself to customer. Troll captains.
I called the captain of store 168. This conversation has been edited for clarity.
Captain: Hello, this is ****, what can I do for you?
Fleas: Hi! So I've been following the news and I saw about Trader Joe's and SpaceX and-
Cap: -we are not part of that lawsuit.
Fleas: I know, that's not what I'm asking. Your lawyer, Christopher Murphy, made an affirmative defense that the NLRA was unconstitutional. And you're still retaining his lawfirm, Morgan Lewis Brockius, who IS arguing that in the lawsuit. You're giving money to the people who are making the argument.
Cap: ...um, all I have is what corporate said.
Fleas: Because if an injunction were passed down from the lawsuit, which you are paying lawyers to fight indirectly, it would still affect the teachers, sanitation workers, nurses and other member of our neighborhood. Does Trader Joe's care about them or...? Cause this could really hurt our community.
Cap: All I know is what corporate tells me.
Fleas: Okay... well, how about this: the company has repeatedly said it supports crew members who want to unionize along with those who don't. If your crew wanted to unionize, how would you support them?
Cap: No one has said anything like that to me.
Fleas: Of course they wouldn't, you'd fire them.
Cap: ...
Fleas: So if you DID have a crew who wanted to unionize, how would you support them?
Cap: Our crew pay and benefits are great and I suggest you ask a crew member-
Fleas: I am a former mate, I know. And that's easy for you to say, you make six figures. The average crew pay at my last store was about $20 and the MIT COLI for Portland was $26 last I checked.
Cap: I'm sorry, what's the COLI? What does all that entail, is it local wages or...?
Fleas: (I explain). I understand you may be happy with your six figures, but what are you doing for the folks who are making $19 or $20? Are you advocating for them to make closer to the minimum for a basic lifestyle in our community?
Cap: ...all I have is what corporate tells me and...
Fleas: I understand, but why does it seem like the national chain isn't telling the captains of the neighborhood grocery stores necessary information?
Cap: Um... Fleas: Yeah. Anyway, thanks for your time, if I have any more questions, I'll let you know.
You're welcome to ask captain 168 about their side of the story if you don't believe me.
