Rant: I'm burning fossil fuels since solar panels on my roof would be 'ugly'
I own a house that has a "heritage overlay" on it in south Sydney. I was well aware of it before I bought it, and there have been renos done around the house with no issues. Most of the time it's just ensuring that the character of the outside facade of the house is preserved - use of certain colour palettes for paint etc.
I've recently wanted to install solar panels on my roof, and this is where I feel that conservation sentiments and environmental / climate protection views haven't come into alignment. Since my house is on a corner lot, putting solar panels on any part of the root would be visible from the street, I've been told flat out - "no". The response I got from the council assessor was:
"I can sympathize with you, but unfortunately, if the panels are visible from any street, it would detract from the heritage nature of the property"
Today is a 40+ degree day in Sydney. I'm at home with an aircon on in the living room and another in a bedroom. Consuming fossil fuel energy off the grid (and paying steeply for it) while the sun beats down on my bare roof. Well, at-least the neighbors don't think my roof is ugly.
