Other than unemployment, there may also be a massive rise in self-employment as well following AGI
I feel this is an underappreciated area not many people here are considering when AGI arrives.
Assuming AGI does lead to massive unemployment (a claim which I am sceptical of as massive productivity improvements always lead to increases in jobs as tasks, not jobs, are automated however it may very well be different here), we're obviously going to see a lot of people out of work and needing a way to make an income. It's in this regard that AGI models help the common person - by using an agent for yourself which can act economically and run a small business for you via communicating with other agents, you can generate an income with next to no input.
The problem then becomes how expensive this AGI would be? I'd argue not very, and moreso a question for credit; any bank should be able to recognise how productive, efficient, and prfotibalt automation is. Even if AGI is £2000 a month, a loan for a year of that per person could potentially generate well over that sort of cost, not even considering how many AGI's could potentially be developed which are cheaper and also self improving. It's essentially a money printing machine for both the bank AND the individual who took out the loan and now has their own business.
This scenario is my personal "most likelyworst case". An early onset of structural unemployment as machines replace labour, followed by a rise in self-employment as consumers gain access to AGI and have it run for them.
I'm really hoping I'm right, if this worst case scenario happens. I really do believe this technology can and will benefit everyone.
