Modern Cinema is so adverse to real looking people and it's killing authenticity in film.
Where are today's Harry Deen Stanton's, M. Emmitt Walsh's, Warren Oates', Dennis Hopper's? Where's today's Susan Tyrrell's? I think the exclusion of ugly and unconventionally attractive people is a driving reason of why I don't watch many modern films anymore or at least don't prioritize them as much.
I recently rewatched The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and it's one of the most gorgeous films yet everyone is so normal looking. The main little girl has so many missing teeth and it's part of the charm. In the commentary, Gilliam explicitly states he cast her because of her mouth. When you see the ethereal goddess Venus, played by Uma Thurman, her beauty is genuinely other worldly because she stands out from the muck.
Charles Bronson wouldn't be a leading man today. Would Cassavetes? The prioritization of models is resulting in such shitty performances and it kills me to see genuinely good directors falling into the trap of hiring from the pool of Hollywood models.
