Everyone was too hard on Gen X

The last generation to make an ethos out of not selling out, rejecting advertising, being suspicious of authority, and standing by your principles. I'm not saying they actually accomplished that but at least they valued those ideas. As cringe as they could be they were better than whatever is happening now. How did the culture go from embracing "authenticity" to complete virtual hyperreality in just 2 generations?
