Doctor suggested more protein. My budget suggests otherwise.
Today my doctor suggested I get more protein in my diet. She started suggesting things like meats, nuts, dairy, soy milk, eggs, quinoa… As the conversation went on, it started to feel like one of those “it’s just one banana, Michael, how much cut it cost? $10?“ situations.
For reference I am disabled and housebound. My grocery budget is $150 a month and is supplemented by a food pantry delivery box that comes with 6 eggs, 1 jar of peanut butter, 1-2 pounds of meat, and 2-3 pounds of grains every month. I do the best I can with what my body and budget allows.
I’m not really looking for advice, I’m just frustrated that so much medical advice and treatment is really based on the idea that you’re able-bodied and have access to time and money. It sucks because without those resources whatever you do will never really be enough.
Edit 1: I initially wrote $150/week, but it’s really $150/month. If only it were that much!
Edit 2: Thanks everyone for your support and ideas! It sounds like I have a few things to look into, including pricing out other delivery methods to see if I can save there.
Some good news—I called the nonprofit that delivers my food boxes and she said she’d be happy to get more meat & beans every month!
