xmas present advice needed!

My fiance loves mario kart and I know he wishes we had a way to play it at home so I want to make that happen for the holidays this year.

We have a switch but it looks like there's only one version that is compatible w/o the online access correct? Is that worth getting? It seems from my admittedly very outsider perspective that the switch controllers wouldn't be as fun to use. I'm open to getting an older system and some controllers as well but I was hoping for some advice on what would be best to look for!

He doesn't really have an interest in other nintendo games besides breath of the wild & tears of the kingdom which is the whole reason we got the switch in the first place during covid. (We do have smash which I also wish we could use bigger controllers for tbh)
