Martin Nečas got a phone call from Pastrňák about his trade sooner than from the Canes GM
Martin Nečas did a Czech interview yesterday in which he was asked about his trade and so many things in it surprised me so I thought I would share the translation of them with you:
Describe the moment when your phone rang and you were told you were leaving for Colorado.
Well, all my friends were calling me, and I saw it everywhere on social media, but the GM or our (Carolina's) owner didn't contact me. We were at a dinner on Long Island with Sebastian Aho and Freddie Andersen, and suddenly, Mráza (Petr Mrázek) texted me that Hall was going to Carolina, which wasn't official yet at that moment.
We (him, Aho, and Andersen) assumed that it was probably for some picks. Then we returned to the hotel, and I saw, somewhere on Instagram, that Carolina Hurricanes was acquiring Mikko Rantanen, so I told myself: "Fuck. Well, then it's obvious that I'm going either to Chicago or Colorado.". Suddenly, it was everywhere. It became official that it was me and Jack Drurry, and three hours after I already knew from social media that it was me, the GM called me that it was official and that I was heading to Colorado.
The days or hours before that, I've read speculations that you could be going to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson. Did you have any idea that this could happen or was it a total surprise when you started seeing it on social media and hearing it from your friend?
It was actually a moment in the last two seasons when I expected to get traded the least. Especially in that period when the trades aren't as common. You know, you often wait till the end of the trade deadline. I was definitely surprised. You tell yourself that you're ready for it or that if it happens, it happens, but the feeling that I had when I saw I was getting traded was completely different from what I had expected. It certainly was a shock. I've seen something (the speculations) concerning Vancouver, but I absolutely didn't expect that I would be traded since we've been having a good season. It came out of the blue.
When you were signing that bridge deal, the two-year contract last year before the season, did you know you were a candidate for the trade? Did you expect it could happen during the contract's duration?
Of course, I took it into consideration, but I expected I would finish the season, and then we would see whether I would extend in Carolina or get traded. I definitely didn't expect it this soon. As I've said, it happened, but it was a shock. We immediately met up with the boys in a restaurant. It was emotional. I have a lot of great friends there, and seven years with them was a long period. The shock that we won't see each other again this season, it was weird, but that's hockey.
During the warm-up (in the game against Boston that was right the next day, following the trade) did you greet Pasta (Pastrňák) and Zachič (Zacha)?
Oh yeah. I was on the phone with Pasta before I even knew about the trade from the GM. He called me on Facetime and asked me if I was already flying to Boston or what, so I told him that everyone around me was ringing me up, but I still didn't know about it from my team, so I wasn't sure whether it was even official. I saw Pasta after the game.
