Expensive first dates vs. simple meetups—what’s everyone’s perspective?

On Hinge, I’ve noticed some women prefer first dates at high-end restaurants, sports games, or other pricey experiences, while others are cool with coffee, a museum, or a walk. Personally, I like to exchange conversations on the app first, then move to a phone call/FaceTime, and then meet in person. That way, I know there’s at least some connection before investing time and money into a date.

If we vibe, I have no problem planning a fun experience we can both enjoy. But if we barely know each other, I don’t see the point in spending a few hundred dollars on a first date.

For women who do prefer high-cost first dates, what’s the reasoning? Is it about setting a standard, making sure the date is memorable, or something else?

For women who don’t prefer expensive first dates, what’s your perspective? Do you feel pressure to accept those kinds of dates, or do you prefer something simple to start?

And for the men out there, have you run into this? How do you approach first dates, and what’s been your experience?
