Question for people who lived the 90s and 2000s
I'm pretty young and if you couldn't already tell, I never experienced those decades. But I do like watching series like The Sopranos and The Simpson and Family Guy, which aired during that time.
Anyways, while I watch these TV shows, I can't help but notice that there are scenes where the characters say things like "the world is too liberal and soft today", or "affirmative action cocksucker" like Tony Soprano said once in a scene. Or that Simpsons episode where Homer is accused of sexually harassing a girl and his reputation takes a steep dive, with an angry mob outside his house. Or Brain the Dog when he's singing about the present day to a grandma and talking about "political correctness" and how it prevents you from saying things that could be seen as offensive.
Or that scene in the sopranos where Finn is talking to Meadow about his current job situation, and he says he doesn't want to get a minimum wage job or some shit because he doesn't want to take a job away from a minority.. that sounds like a 2020 thing to say, but I was always under the assumption that kind of thought was non existent in 2004.
Now I know college has always been liberal, so maybe that kind of shit was always commonplace then, but still.
In the case of The Simpsons and Family Guy, these are scenes that parody what I was always told was a staple of Western culture TODAY. Not back when these episodes aired.
And you can see that both "affirmative action" and "political correctness" are just the older terms for "DEI" and "woke" respectively.
Today, you always see people complaining about stuff being too woke nowadays, and some folks respond to that by saying "you would've called (insert old ass movie here) woke if it came out today!".
Or people always saying "this wouldn't have never been made in (insert current year)". But even then, I've pretty much been hearing that every year ever since I was old enough to use a computer.
My question is, were these opinions and attitudes towards "woke" or "dei" and the idea that people are too soft today always a thing? Were they as commonplace in the 90s and 00s as they are now?
