What are classics you read in school?

Background info, if you care: My boyfriend is from Spain and didn’t move to the US until he was 18. At his school in Spain he was never assigned to read a single book. After moving here he read a handful of classic literature to better understand American culture, but there are still a lot he hasn’t read (and many I still haven’t read too).

What are some classic books you were assigned to read in school? I’ve come up with a list in my head on what to start but would love to know what you all read in school, even if it wasn’t at a school in the US.

(Some books I want him to start with are “The Giver,” “The Hiding Place,” “Frankenstein,” and “Jane Eyre.” He hasn’t read “The Great Gatsby” but has seen the movie so obviously I think he needs to read the actual book. I also think he should read “Hatchet,” as it’s a very popular book for kids to read in school.)
