Coworker wants kids they can't afford

My coworker has two jobs - one full-time and another part-time, his wife also has a full-time job. He was telling me that they know they can't afford to have a child on their current income, but they are still trying. I don't know how anyone can afford a child in this economy (USA), I won't even go into why they would want to in this political climate. If you can't afford your life now, why add a kid? Do you think you'll be able to keep working two jobs when you have a newborn? It's not going to get better when you are working less and have higher expenses...
