Some Muslims are claiming the prophet Abraham is our Father of the Nation

Recently, the title of Father of the Nation has become very controversial. There are many reasons behind this, and many explanations too. But what seems to defy explanations, at least for me, is the claim by some religious Muslims that the prophet Abraham (or Ibrahim in Arabic) should hold this title. Now I understand the desire to legitimize one's religion by trying to promote such ideas, but surely this is a bit too farfetched? What do you guys think on this matter?
