2 seat cancellations in a month??

I purchased flights for me and my partner in early September for us to fly YVR>YOW in November to visit family. A couple weeks later I suddenly got an email refunding me for our seat choice fees for one direction, with no further explanation or information. I thought it was weird, but I logged in and was able to re-choose (different) seats, and re-paid for seats with extra legroom (my partner is 6’4” so despite only being able to afford economy, we always splurge on extra leg room at least).

This morning, it happened again; I got an email only telling me I had a refund for seat choices. When I logged in online all options for making changes were unable to be clicked on, and it showed we had been reassigned seats at the back of the plane with regular leg room. Since the website wouldn’t let me make changes or give any further information, I had to call in to try to re-purchase upgraded seats and was told there weren’t 2 seats available together, they had changed planes and reshuffled all the seats I guess. I eventually agreed to separate seats in the same row, and we’ll do the sad puppy eyes to our seat neighbours when boarding to see if we can sit together.

Our tickets were purchased together at the same time, same transaction, and we paid for our seat upgrades at the same time we purchased our flights. Here’s my question, we were given 2 middle seats in rows with groups of 3 seats, so there are single seats all around us, why wouldn’t Air Canada assign us seats together when the plane was changed?! And does anyone have experience with this happening? Are we going to go through this again before our flight in just over a month?
