What is the best non-monetary donation way to support the political and economic interests of the working class in Virginia?

What are the political and community organizations doing the most to effect positive change for the non-wealthy? I don't want to donate money. I want to donate my time and effort, and have some kind of ability to take a more active role in the organization itself.
