Join a posse, is it a trap, like in GTA?

I come from mmorpgs where you are almost a leper if not in a guild. So, I kinda feel alone in this game.

Are there organized posses? Like not temporary for one online session with randoms.

Also, random posse invites, is that just to lure me close so they can kill me?
