What exactly makes anime characters hot?

A huge portion of the internet foams at the mouth over anime characters. I don’t understand, but I want to.

I’m not looking for examples of why a specific anime character is hot, but in general, what is the appeal of these two dimensional figures? Why do so many people find them physically attractive? I want to know what traits they have that, for some people, make them hotter than a real person.
