Let down by GX460

As the title says, I was really let down by my 2011 GX460. I have owned 2 GX470’s and a GX460. I am curious if others have had a similar experience.

The Good: I loved the body style of my 2011. It always struck me as a leaner Land Cruiser. I enjoyed the silky smooth powertrain and utility the vehicle offered. There are not many body on frame V8 SUV options left on the market. Actually, almost none in 2024.

The Bad: I always preached the reliability of these. However, mine turned out to be unreliable. I was meticulous with maintenance and experienced the following at 85-105k miles:

Intake valley coolant leak Radiator leak Cam tower oil leak (Lexus and an independent quoted $5-6k to fix the oil leak.) MAF sensor went bad Chrome on the Lexus logo on the steering wheel flaked off Leather on front and rear seats cracked and looked very worn for the mileage

In my opinion, these were unacceptable on a vehicle that everyone touts as a 300-400k mile truck. Of course I could keep fixing it but it gets old having your car in for major repairs at 100k miles.

I ended up trading it in recently. I do miss it some days. I had driven GX’s the better part of the past 8 years. I’m convinced the 470’s, 100 series, and 4runner might be some of the last truly reliable ones.
