A think piece on Kanye West
When was the last time Kanye made a truly great album that had people talking about his music and artistry? It’s been nearly 5 years or more. Most of these great works people bring up like Graduation or College Dropout are nearly 20 years old. I’d argue that his blindly diehard fans today weren’t even around for those albums. They became fans because they wanted to be contrarians or just for the drama.
Kanye used to push boundaries with his music and storytelling, but now he’s just throwing out lazy, inauthentic lyrics. It’s either overtly sexual or saying deliberately offensive things he doesn’t even believe just to get attention. He has no morals. He’s not doing it for the creative expression or storytelling anymore. He doesn’t have anything good to put out, and no one’s talking about his recent work. They’re talking about his stunts—like his Grammy antics. His persona is getting more attention than his music.
He’s learned that if he blows up, he’ll still get attention, even if it’s not for music. His fanbase now is built on chaos, not creativity. The controversies and twitter tirades are a crutch for someone who’s lost the ability to create at the level he once did. It’s the only way he knows to stay in the conversation and have attention.
These “crashouts” don’t add to his legacy. If anything, they just show how far removed he is from what made him great. If he had anything left to offer, he’d be channeling that energy into making fresh music. Not another lazy ty$ collab. Instead, he’s using his platform to boost his ego and act like a 14-year-old edgelord just for the clicks.
Kanye doesn’t make music that matters anymore. He’s just making noise. And noise isn’t art. The only way he stays relevant now is by being offensive because his music doesn’t do that for him anymore.
