Did it take you a while to get into jazz?

When I'm talking about get into jazz, I'm not referring to the more mainstream type stuff like jazz rock. I mean more big band jazz or fusion type of stuff. Sometimes when I'm listening to jazz some of it is either hit or miss for me, I enjoy Chet Baker and Michael Franks but that type of stuff is more mainstream and vocal. I find it hard for me to find an album that is purely instrumental that I enjoy, especially the big band jazz. I've been trying to get more into jazz and discover some new artists, such as Michael Franks, but he is still vocal with his music. I enjoy a few songs by Miles and Coltrane but apart from them, they are the only instrumental jazz artists I like a few songs of. Are there any good just getting into the genre kind of albums I could listen to that are good for new listeners? And did it take you a while to start enjoying more instrumental based jazz? Thanks for any responses, I'm trying to get into more genres and want to know what yall think.
