Katniss and Haymitch’s relationship
I absolutely adore the relationship of Haymitch and Katniss- it’s almost parental. i was re reading the books and that one scene where haymitch is telling her off for the earpiece is so funny and cute. ‘ these are your options ‘ and it’s just a list of more horrific things he knows she’ll hate just to get the message across, and Katniss can’t totally tell if he’s joking but responds in an almost childlike way
“I’ll keep the earpiece on” I say loud enough to wake half the hospital. "You sure? Because I'm equally happy with any of the three options," he tells me The vibes of that is almost exactly just a dad joking around with his kid because they don’t want to wear their seatbelts, but not even exasperated because it’s so on brand for their kid, that it’s just funny to try coax them into doing it in a way they’ll listen.
Neither Haymitch or Katniss are saints, they’ve done their fair share of questionable things, but the way they view each other is the most adorable thing. Katniss truly trusts Haymitch in a way she doesn’t trust anyone, she instinctually believed him, knowing he wouldn’t withhold water from her unless she was near water- knowing to trust what he says because he’s probably right and has her best interest at heart. Haymitch truly loves Katniss. He saw something in her- probably a piece of himself when he was younger, snarky, hating of the capital, desperate to stay alive, and with the berries? exaclty him, in miniature.
It’s just really sweet to re read the books with little nuggets of that in there, because it just makes me smile. Haymitch not telling Katniss any small bit of information about Peeta because he knows she won’t want to hear anything expect real tangible and irreversible improvement. Katniss gets mad at Haymitch for the Peeta thing in also such a child-like way.
For a second, I’m afraid he’s dying. I have to remind myself that I don’t care.
He instantly trusts her, and trusts her judgement, but also overrides her in situations where he knows better, is such a parental dynamic that i find it genuienly adorable..
What’s everyone’s favourite Katniss Haymitch moment? x
