are himachali people less homophobic/more liberal than most states?
I was born and brought up mostly in himachal, however around 3 years ago, i left it for university. I went to the “big city” thinking that yes, it’ll be more modern and more open compared to the environment us himachalis grew up in (in all fairness, i still think our upbringing is much better). However, going to the big city was much more eye opening especially when it comes to homophobia. For context, I’m not a part of LGTBQ+ community, but I have never really seen any issue with people who are neither my family or friends (from himachal), or any other himachali people i know (from different parts of himachal), have ever made such comments when they saw a very obvious gay couple. Whereas, in the “big city” I keep on encountering super homophobic people (they give rape/death threats to the community), which is honestly bizarre to me, because as i mentioned I didn’t think they’d be THIS against it all. A few months ago, one of our neighbours (f25) mentioned to my daddi (78f) how her friend was in live in. and she didn’t really say anything against it and even said that it’s normal in today’s time. So I have a feeling that we’re more tolerant/peaceful and laid back than most of the people outside himachal. However, it’s only my personal experience and I cannot say for sure. So, I’d like to ask the himachali redditors, if it’s true or not.
