"Finger-picking v. Sweep-picking" or "Could you not use fingerpicking in the place of sweep picking?"

So I been playing guitar for the past 14 years now, and I am mostly self-taught with the exception of the first few months when I took classical guitar lessons. As a result, I prefer finger-picking for most songs unless it's a song/riff that incorporates palm muting and a mixture of tremolo picking/strums. I often end up switching back and forth between using a pick and my fingers on some songs like when I have to play arpeggios (fingers then) and when I have to play scales (pick and sometimes fingers). For example, if I were to play Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," I would be playing the intro/verse with my fingers and switch to a pick for everything else.

Lately, I have been hitting a barrier with learning some songs that require sweep-picking like some Judas Priest and basically almost every Dethklok song. Sweep-picking feels really awkward for me as I feel I lose track of the strings much more easily than I would with my fingers.

So, out of curiosity do any of you believe that finger-picking can be a good substitute for sweep-picking or is there any way I can combine finger-picking with sweep-picking?
