Maverick vs Tacoma. Reliability vs Fuel Economy. Help me decide.
My wife and I just bought our first house, have our first kid on the way, and are looking to get another car. During our family planning process, I traded in my Chevy Volt for a Subaru Outback that we've shared for now with the intention that it would be my wife's car and I would get a truck. I want to get a truck now that we've got a fixer-upper house just for basic things like dump runs and home depot trips and I also want it to be a safe family car with enough cab space for car seats to fit comfortably (I'm 6'1"). I ordered a 2024 Maverick XL last year but got cold feet from the same concerns I have now and walked. Its still sitting on the lot and I'm wondering if I made the right call. I think the Maverick lines up the best with my use case, I love that its a hybrid and I really don't plan on doing any kind of crazy "truck stuff" with it, but I am concerned with Ford's reliability in general. If Toyota made the Maverick, I wouldn't even think twice about it. I went and tried to test drive it last weekend and couldn't because of an active safety recall. The sales associate said it was deemed to be too risky and its hard to want to buy a new car off the lot that's got safety concerns straight from the factory. Its also a 2024 I ordered last year and the dealership seemingly wont budge on the sticker price of $31,000. Even when I look at used hybrid Mavericks, its hard to shake mileage concerns that I simply don't have when looking at used Tacomas. I am a lot more skeptical of buying a used Maverick with 40,000 miles on it than I am buying a used Tacoma with the same mileage. Whatever I end up buying, I want to drive for the next decade and that makes me lean more towards a 4-cylinder Tacoma. In our area, I can get a 2020 SR for $27,000ish and I know its got decades of reliability behind it, but I'm having a hard time on pulling the trigger on another 22-24 mpg vehicle. It was a big shift going from a 45mpg sedan hybrid to a 23mpg wagon. We live in the city too with ideal Maverick start-and-stop driving conditions. Ive test driven both thinking that would help with my decision making process and its only made things harder. I have 2 people in my life that have Mavericks and both of them have had minor to major recall issues. I'm torturing my wife with constant pros and cons/flip flopping between these two options and its getting closer and closer to time to make a decision. Am I overly concerned about reliability with the Maverick? Would you feel concerned about buying a used 2022/23 with 40,000 miles on it? If you could do it all again, would you still buy your Maverick over a Tacoma?
