[WIP] What is a “length” in cross stitching?

I’m brand new as in I’ve never threaded a single strand of thread through cross stitch fabric. I got a kit online and I understand everything in the legend except for what a “length” is and Google has been no help! Just want to make sure I start off on the right foot 🙂
