Trying to use points for the first time.

I transferred 80,000 points to my United Airlines account in hopes of using them to purchase 2 domestic flights. Holy cow!! It's as if the points have no value whatsoever. I'm so confused by this. The tickets would use all the points and still cost me many hundreds of dollars. What is the secret? This all feels like a waste and should just switch to a cash back card.
