Does Australian youth have an anti-cop culture?

Do young Aussies (teens/early 20s) have a strong dislike for the police?

I went to a comedy show last night and felt like the oldest person in the room; the comedian is Canadian and has a successful YouTube career, which I guess is why the audience was full of teens and young adults. Anyway, the comedian did a bit about how awful cops are; the audience did some wooing and cheering, but not much. He stopped the show and asked if we're on the same page, and the crowd erupted in support. I looked over at my partner and was genuinely baffled by the audience's response.

I firmly believe that the joke was built around American cops because he referenced seeing police bodycam videos on Facebook (all of which are American from what I've seen) and police shooting dogs. When that got a confused reaction, he said "oh, that doesn't happen down here?" His show is international so it would be tailored for a wide audience.

ANYWAY, the joke aside, I was really confused and taken aback by the audience's response. I understand we were at a show so naturally you want to join in, but I've found Aussies are pretty good at conveying something to comedians if we collectively don't agree with something.

Does anyone know if there is a growing movement of young people in Australia who actively hate police? Or do you think their response was just for show? I feel like I've really missed something because I'm older than all of them and don't have TikTok lol.

Thanks for any insights!

Edit: over 200 comments in under 3 hours! I appreciate everyone opening up and sharing their experiences (I've read them all), it's been eye-opening and so interesting to see how vastly different everyone's stories are. Some people haven't been super nice because of my supposed privileged life lol, but otherwise you've all been awesome. 😊
