Dwarf hair grass in sand capped fluval stratum?

I just planted some dwarf hair grass and I'm wondering how fast or even if it will make a carpet. The substrate is new fluval stratum (with some dirt mixed in from a previous tank) and capped with about 2cm black sand.

I'm worried the sand might be too thick and keep the plant from getting nutrients.
